Undergraduate Research

Undergraduate Research

MPS Scholars develops, promotes, and connects students to undergraduate research opportunities in astronomy, earth and planetary science, physics, and mathematics. We encourage all students to participate in research and walk students step by step through the process of finding, securing, and funding their research.

MPS Scholars Undergraduate Research Funding

MPS Scholars provides guidance and funding for students to conduct undergraduate research over the summer. To be eligible for funding, you must be an intended or declared major in the following MPS departments: Astronomy, Earth & Planetary Science, Physics, and Mathematics. Students who are selected will receive a $5500 summer stipend, and $850 will be provided to the graduate student mentor (if applicable). Another $250 can be used for research-related expenses pertaining to the project.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • (1) You must be a current UC Berkeley student. International and undocumented students are eligible for funding. Exchange students are not eligible for funding.
  • (2) You must be an intended or declared major in the departments of Astronomy, Earth and Planetary Science, Physics, and Mathematics. If applicable, your research can be conducted outside of these departments.
  • (3) Your research must be conducted with faculty, research scientists, postdoctoral scholars, or graduate students at UC Berkeley, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), Space Sciences Laboratory (SSL), or Simons Laufer Mathematical Sciences Institute (SLMath).

MPS Scholars Funding Application

Summer 2025 application will open in March.

MPS Research Fair

The MPS Reserach Fair, co-sponsored by the physics, astronomy, EPS, and math departments, offers a chance for students to learn about opportunities for summer research, strategies to land your first research position, and possible openings for research in MPS labs and groups.

No matter if students are just entering school and new to research, or if they have some research experience in the past, they are all highly encouraged to participate, interact with different groups, and learn from each other!
